Rear admiral in the Union Army (1807–1877). ALS signed “C. H. Davis—Rear Admiral and Superintendent,” two pages, lightly-lined, 7.5 x 9.5, Observatory letterhead, April 16, 1866. Letter to Darius Ingraham. In part: “It is most touching to observe these displays of an unceasing watchfulness over the welfare of those who have been deprived of wither their natural Guardians by the war of the rebellion—and reflect upon the influence which these manifestations of the sentiment of gratitude to our dead soldiers, and of duty to their families, is to exercise upon the future character of the nation, with pride and pleasure.” In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light toning.
