James Buchanan

Ink signature, “James Buchanan, Wheatland, 26 March 1861,” on an off-white 3.25 x 1 slip. Scattered soiling, otherwise fine condition. Wheatland was the name of Buchanan’s beloved home in Pennsylvania, and he signed this shortly after Abraham Lincoln replaced him as president on March 4, 1861. He is known to have said to the incoming president, ‘If you are as happy in entering the White House as I shall feel on returning to Wheatland, you are a happy man.’ Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
