Daniel Butterfield

Union general (1831–1901) who saw action at Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, as well as nearly all the engagements of the Peninsula Campaign and Sherman’s March to the Sea. He is generally credited as the composer of the bugle call ‘Taps.’ ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7.75, Craigside letterhead, no date. Letter to “Nicholson.” In part: “By my oversight & neglect you didn’t get the dandiest dinner souvenir ever made.” Three horizontal folds, and light scattered creases and soiling, otherwise fine condition.
