Description

Exceptionally rare and pristine signature from the father of free verse

Large, bold, and visually impressive ink signature, “Walt Whitman, Ocean Grove, NJ, Oct. 8 ‘83,” on an off-white 6 x 3.5 album page. In fine condition, with uniform shade of toning and light spots of soiling.

Whitman made his way to Ocean Grove in September of 1883 to see his friend and fellow writer, John Burroughs; Whitman arrived right as Burroughs had finished reading Darwin’s Origin of Species, and a meeting of the minds concerning evolution and Darwinian theory commenced, greatly affecting both men. These discussions were certainly on Whitman’s mind as he peered out to the open sea and wrote his famous poem, ‘With Husky-Haughty Lips, O Sea!’ A stunning example, we scarcely see a Whitman signature of such stature and clarity. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
