Description

Sheridan orders a 100-gun salute to honor George H. Thomas’ “brilliant victory” in the Battle of Nashville

ALS signed “Phil. H. Sheridan,” one page, 5 x 8, December 17, 1864. The letter is headed “Headquarters M[iddle] M[ilitary] D[istric]t, Winchester” and addressed to Brigadier General Stevenson at Harpers Ferry. In full, “I want you to give Genl [George H.] Thomas one hundred guns [salute] for his second brilliant victory on the 16th.” In fine condition.

Written two months after his men delivered a crushing defeat to Lt. Get. Jubal A. Early’s Confederate troops at Cedar Creek, Sheridan requests an honorable gesture of congratulations to another victorious leader, Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas, who played a pivotal role in the Battle of Nashville, one of the most substantial Union triumphs during the war, and just one day before this letter was penned. The radiating jubilance and timing of this letter make for an impressive addition to any Civil War collection. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
