Description

“And between us, it is highly advisable to get the limies interested in our war with the japs”

ALS signed “Joe,” two pages, 8.5 x 11, Office of the Commanding General, United States Armed Forces, China Burma India letterhead. Stilwell pens a letter to a friend. In part: “Lord Louis is your man, and I’m just the no. 2 boy. Don’t misunderstand me, I simply don’t want you to get any false impressions. From what I hear, Louis is a good egg, full of P[iss] and V[inegar], and an excellent choice for this cock-eyed set-up. And between us, it is highly advisable to get the limies [sic] interested in our war with the japs. If a great-grandson of Queen Victoria can’t do that, who can? When, and if, I get home, I am going to run for dog-catcher in Carmel on the strength of my experience in national politics. I ought to be good as a dog-catcher; I have certainly associated with enough sons of bitches to get to know their general make-up. In fact, it’s getting harder and harder to keep mad at the japs.” Adding a post script, Stilwell initials “J.W.S.” at the conclusion: “I know they don’t fool you any, but just to confirm it—keep your tongue in your cheek when the Great Ones are being eulogized. In almost every case, when you get around in back, you find their asses are out.” Intersecting folds, a uniform shade of toning with heavier areas along the top edge, and light scattered foxing on the second page, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, postmarked September 7, 1943. Stilwell points out the capabilities of Vice Adm. Lord Louis Mountbatten, to whom he served as deputy in the China–Burma–India Theater. The general also expresses his frustration with the lack of focus on the Asian theater from our British allies, who were turning their attention towards dismantling the Germans.
