DeWitt Clinton

American politician (1769-1828) who served as senator and who, as governor of New York, played a major role in the construction of the Erie Canal. ALS, one page, 8 x 9.25, August 22, 1817. Brief letter of introduction to G. Mumford, Esq. In full: “I beg leave to introduce Mr. Leahie a friend of ours from Nassau County.” In very good condition, with partial separations along intersecting folds, with two folds passing through signature, and scattered light toning, foxing, and soiling.
