Description

John Hancock

Three items: a crisp ink signature, “John Hancock,” on an off-white 2.25 x 1.75 clipped slip; a 1780 ALS to Hancock from his neighbor Samuel Bridge, explaining his reason for cutting down one of Hancock’s trees. In part: “I would inform you that through necessity have been obliged to cut one of your trees near my house to keep my family from suffering in this uncommon season…I should not have cut it upon any account only pure necessity.”; and a steel-engraved portrait of Hancock from a painting by Alonza Chappel. In fine condition, with a bit of light toning and ink flecks to signed slip; and expected folds and toning to letter. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
