Description

Taft on the watch: "The new constable and guardian…would like to know where the keys of your house are"

TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 8 x 10.5, personal letterhead, October 15, 1916. Letter to his neighbor at Pointe-a-Pic. In part, “I have a letter from the new constable and guardian at Pointe-a-Pic, saying that he found a window open at your house, which was either forgotten or opened by the wind. He would like to know where the keys of your house are so that he may close it securely…We are looking forward with pleasure to a visit from Gertrude and Henrietta to the pageant. I am afraid they will find the pageant stupid, but whether they do or not, we shall enjoy their visit, because there is never any danger of such a result when the angels from Elysium come.” Archivally shadow box framed with a gold-inlaid, sterling silver portrait plate issued in a limited edition by the Franklin Mint in the early-to-mid 1970s to an overall size of 28.5 x 20. In fine condition, with a few mild creases. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
