Description

Uncommon and intense Tolstoy portrait paired with a signed book

Russian novelist and moral philosopher (1828–1910) best known for his epic novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Two items: Scarce vintage 3.5 x 5.5 postcard photo, signed and inscribed in black ink, in Russian, "To Solomon Moiseevich, London, June 1903. Leo Tolstoy." Paper loss to left edge and lower left corner affecting a single word to Tolstoy's writing (most likely his location), trimmed top corner tips, some light creases, and a couple small spots of toning, otherwise very good condition; and a rebound hardcover Tolstoy work, in Russian, signed on the title page in black ink by Tolstoy. Book has creasing, soiling, and toning to signed page, light soiling and foxing to some of the inside pages, wear and chipping to fore-edges and bottom edges. A desirable image of one of the world's greatest novelists, signed at the time when a dramatic adaptation of his 'Resurrection' was all the rage on the London stage. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
