Description

A 23-year-old JFK pens an uncharacteristically legible letter concerning Joe Kennedy, Sr.'s presidential aspirations: “He is not waging a formal campaign”

Very early and extremely legible ALS, one page both sides, 7 x 10.5, Stanford letterhead, November 27, 1940. Letter to Mr. Haueisen, sending thanks on behalf of his father. In full: “I regret that I have not answered your letter sooner but have just returned. As you requested, I passed your letter along to my father and he asked me to tell you he appreciated it very much. He feels however, that as he is not waging a formal campaign that you should not relinquish your position with Southern Pacific Company. He was extremely pleased to find someone taking such great interest and he wanted me to be sure and thank you very much.” Nicely signed in full at the conclusion, “John F. Kennedy.”

From September to December 1940, Kennedy was enrolled in classes at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Earlier in the same month as his son writes this letter, Kennedy’s father, Joseph Kennedy, Sr., had resigned his position of ambassador to England, the result of a public outcry after repeatedly stating his belief that the war with Germany was not about saving democracy from facism. These political gaffes put an end to any chance of Joseph running for president. He then turned his attention to his oldest son Joseph, Jr., to gain the presidency. After Joseph was killed over England in 1944, Kennedy turned to his second son, whom he groomed for the office of president. In fine condition, with a mild shade of uniform toning, a bit heavier at the edges, and a few mild wrinkles and creases.
