Description

JFK, distracted by “the pressures of the campaign,” sends condolences to a Rhode Islander

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Congress of the United States, House of Representatives letterhead, no date. Letter to Anne Correra in Rhode Island. In full: “Since I just returned home from Europe, I have been delayed in answering your letter of November 20. I want you to know that you have my deepest sympathy in your loss, and I hope you will let me know if there is ever anything I can do. I am sincerely sorry about your first letter. Perhaps, due to the pressures of the campaign, it was lost because I would have only been too glad to comply with your request. I appreciate your writing to me at this time, and I hope that I shall meet you sometime soon.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one horizontal fold affecting tops of a few letters of signature), some mild toning along horizontal folds and a light stain to the third paragraph, some light wrinkling and rippling, and light show-through from pencil notations on reverse.

Kennedy had announced plans to make his first Congressional run in April 1946, campaigning in the district once represented by his grandfather, John ‘Honey Fitz’ Fitzgerald. With the support of his grandfather—and the family name—JFK easily won the primary and the general election in Democratic Boston. By 1952, likely around the time of this correspondence, Kennedy had taken aim at the US Senate seat, defeating incumbent Republican Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. and eventually representing Massachusetts from 1953 to 1960. His time on Capitol Hill, of course was just a primer for his eventual rise to the presidency. Great personal content as Kennedy began his rise to power. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
