Signed scrapbook entitled “Edison-Burroughs-Firestone Vacation Trip.” Hardcover, 9 x 12. Signed on a special “Greetings” page in fountain pen, “Thos. A. Edison,” “John Burroughs,” and “H. S. Firestone.” The page reads in part: “Mr. Edison made plans for a Vacation Camping party including beside himself, Mr. John Burroughs, Mr. H. S. Firestone and Mr. Henry Ford (who we regret was unavoidably prevented from being with us). As a little diary of this trip, which proved so enjoyable to all of us, we are sending this book to our friends who we think will be interested in the events of those two weeks in August and September 1916.” The volume contains a fantastic collection of forty-three vintage unsigned gelatin silver print photographs with brief narratives. Few small chips to the interior pages, toning, surface wear to the covers, and mild wear and chipping to the spine, otherwise fine condition with Edison’s familiar ‘umbrella’ signature exceptionally bold.
The pictures here chronicle the leisure time of the great men, whose informal group became known as the Illustrious Vagabonds. It was the custom of these men to retire to the country on an annual two-week camping trip accompanied by their wives and children. These trips were highly publicized and were eventually immortalized in a Broadway play entitled Tom and Henry. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
