Description

The former First Lady pens a quote from noted poet and author Lord Lytton

AQS, signed “D. P. Madison, June 24, 1842,” on an off-white 4 x 5 sheet. Madison pens a quote from Act II Scene II of ‘Richelieu: or The Conspiracy.’ In full: “The statues of our stately fortune, Are sculptored by the Chisel – not the Axe.’” In fine condition. Lytton was immensely popular with the reading public and wrote a stream of bestselling novels which earned him a considerable fortune. He coined the phrases ‘the great unwashed,’ ‘pursuit of the almighty dollar,’ ‘the pen is mightier than the sword,’ and the famous opening line ‘It was a dark and stormy night.’ Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
