Description

Lincoln appoints a Union officer later captured by Confederate General John Hunt Morgan

Partly-printed war-dated DS as president, one page, 15 x 19, July 26, 1862. President Lincoln appoints George G. Lott to the position of “Additional Aide-de-Camp with the rank of Captain.” Signed at the conclusion by Lincoln, and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Document appears to have been mounted, and is framed to an overall size of 16.5 x 20.5. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, written portions of document a few shades light, but completely legible, Lincoln’s signature a shade light, with last letter of signature darker from a water stain impinging from the right side, and light bubbling to several areas from mounting.

Captain Lott would be among the Union forces captured in June 1864 during the Battle of Kellar Bridge, led by Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan. On June 11, Morgan approached Cynthiana, Kentucky at dawn with a force of 1,200 men. Although a reinforcement of men from the 171st Ohio National Guard tried to repel the invasion, Morgan ultimately forced the Northern troops to surrender, resulting in about 1,300 Union prisoners of war camping with him overnight‚ including Lott. More than 2,400 men, a combined force of Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan mounted infantry and cavalry, attacked Morgan at dawn the following day, driving back the Rebels back. An always desirable Civil War presidential appointment. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
