William Cullen Bryant

Highly regarded American poet (1794–1878) of such much-anthologized works as ‘Thanatopsis.’ Apart from his literary activities, Bryant was also an ardent abolitionist and one of the founders of the Republican Party. ALS signed “Wm. C. Bryant,” one page, 7.75 x 5.5, March 4, 1842. Bryant forwards a letter of recommendation to the Honorable J. I. Roosevelt. In part: “The bearer of this letter, Mr. Oliver H. Hicks…is desirous of obtaining the situation of purser in the navy. Am assured that he is a person of excellent character.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered toning, show-through from mounting remnants on the reverse, and tape repair on the back to reinforce small tears.
