Admitting to himself as “not very imaginative,” Hart concocts a plan to draw an elephant: “You find the elephant, get hold of his tusks … and hold him till I make the drawing”

ALS signed “Thomas H. Benton,” one page, 7.5 x 10.5, personal letterhead, April 19, 1974. Letter to a gentleman inquiring about a sketch of an elephant. In full: “The only way I could do an elephant, either of India or Africa, for you is as follows. Get two round trip airplane tickets for you and me to India or Africa. You find the elephant, get hold of his tusks, trunk, or tail, and hold him till I make the drawing. I’m not very imaginative.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed by Hart, as well as a 1989 exhibition program. A humorous response from Hart being outside his comfort zone. RRAuction COA.
