John C. Calhoun

Prominent American politician (1782–1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. ALS signed “J. C. Calhoun,” one page, 8 x 9.75, March 30, 1822. As secretary of war under Monroe, Calhoun responds to an inquiry. from Congressman Jonathan Russell. In part: “I received your note of yesterday…On examining the candidates from Massachusetts, it was found that only one of those you recommended would be appropriate. Mr. Daniels standing first on your list was selected. His appointment is herewith enclosed with the request that you will give it its proper direction.” Horizontal folds and a bit of uneven toning along the edges, otherwise fine condition.In very good condition, with horizontal folds and a bit of uneven toning along the edges.
