Description

President Johnson remits funds to a Texas county tax assessor

Two checks: rare Johnson City Bank check, 7.75 x 2.75, filled out in type and signed “Lyndon B. Johnson” as president, payable to Mr. E. D. Spellman - Tax Assessor - Collector, Burnet County for $14.84, October 2, 1967; and a Johnson City Bank check, 6 x 2.5, filled out and signed “Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson,” payable to the Madison Hotel for $102.16, April 20, 1971. Archivally double cloth matted with portraits of both the president and first lady and framed to an overall size of 24.25 x 20. Expected cancellation stamps (showing through from the reverse on the LBJ check and touching Lady Bird’s signature on the front) and a vertical fold and staple hole on the president’s check, otherwise in fine condition. LBJ’s check, written as president, likely pertains to his automobile tax. A Johnson signed check is rare in any form—even more so when dating to his administration! This is the first such LBJ check we have offered and is quite possibly the first ever to be offered at auction. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
