Office of Discount and Deposit check, 7 x 2.5, filled out and signed by Van Buren, “M. Van Buren,” payable to Mr. Forsyth for $78.57, May 25, 1826. Archivally cloth matted and framed, with a portrait of Van Buren to an overall size of 15 x 21. In very good condition, with cancellation cut to top of check, a light diagonal crease through a single letter of signature, red pencil cancellation, and some light foxing affecting last couple of letters of signature. Van Buren was serving as a US senator from New York when he made this payment to “Mr. Forsyth”—likely John Forsyth, who at the time was serving as a member of Congress representing Georgia. After Van Buren took office as president in 1837, he retained Forsyth as his secretary of state. A scarce check. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
