Howard reflects on the powerful father of a fellow Union general: “He showed himself my friend during the Civil War”

One-armed Union general (1830–1909) who participated at Gettysburg and commanded the Army of Tennessee during Sherman’s March to the Sea. TLS signed “Oliver Otis Howard,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Lincoln Memorial University letterhead, October 29, 1903. Howard writes to General Francis Fessenden. In full: “I thank you very much for your contribution of $25 and still more for the beautiful letter you have written me. I hardly think anyone outside of your family had a tenderer feeling toward your honored father than myself. Again and again he showed himself my friend during the Civil War.” In fine condition, with moderate intersecting folds, a one-letter handwritten correction to the text, and light handling wear.
