Description

Edward W. Hinks

Career United States Army officer who served as a brigadier general during the American Civil War and participated at Antietam and Petersburg. ALS signed “Edw. W. Hinks,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, October 26, 1874. Letter to George Nichols. In part: “Your note enclosed…concerning the land is just received; I entirely concur with you, that $2500 is not a fair price for the two lots; but as I did not know but you would like to sell, I did not like to take the responsibility of refusing the offer. If the lands were all my own I should have refused it at once…I should prefer to sell these lots through Mr. Hooper as he has an interest in common with us to preserve the character of the neighborhood…I am sure that I am not to give away our lands to prevent them from being bought by worthy residents at fair prices.” Hinks also adds a short postscript, signing “EWH.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a uniform shade of mild toning. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Hinks’s hand. RRAuction COA.
