Edwin M. Stanton

American politician (1814–1869) who served as secretary of war in the cabinets of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. ALS, one page, 8 x 9.75, no date. Letter of recommendation to Captain Benham, Chief Engineer of the Washington Aquaduct. In part: “The undersigned begs leave to recommend Lieutenant H. N. Harrison for an appointment under your charge. Mr. Harrison is a gentleman of great merit, of unsurpassed diligence and fidelity in the discharge of any duty entrusted to him.” Intersecting folds, with a few small separations, a uniform shade of light toning, and light mirroring of ink to top, otherwise fine condition.
