The day after Detroit and control of Lake Erie falls to the British navy, the president promotes an officer in the US Marines

Uncommon partly-printed Marine DS as president, one page, 14.25 x 17, August 17, 1812. President Madison appoints William H. Freeman “a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corp.” Signed at the bottom by Madison and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Paul Hamilton. Moderate storage folds, toning and light fading to Madison’s signature, scattered paper loss along folds and at bottom, scattered toning and soiling, and red seal remnants to bottom, otherwise good condition. Marine-related documents are highly desirable. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
