Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 14 x 8, March 20, 1809. President Madison signs a land grant for a tract of land in Jeffersonville for Jesse Hensley in the Indiana Territory. Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Madison and countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith. In good condition, with trimmed edges, small areas of paper loss along intersecting storage folds, and scattered toning and soiling. The white paper seal is worn, but intact. The city plans for Jeffersonville were laid out by Thomas Jefferson and it was the only such city that he ever designed. In 1802, future President William Henry Harrison, who was the Governor of the Indiana Territory at the time, decided to name the new city Jeffersonville in honor of Thomas Jefferson. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
