Description

Businessmen Henry Wells (1805–1878) and William Fargo (1818–1881) founded the American Express Company in 1850 and the Wells Fargo Company in 1851. By capitalizing on the burgeoning need for express and banking services, both men (and their companies) came to number among the greatest success stories in the commercial development of the American west—and, indeed, became still-familiar household words. Partly printed DS, one page, 12 x 8.25, November 7, 1864. A handsomely engraved certificate for three shares of capital stock in the American Express Company, issued to Alfred Van Saritvoord of Albany, signed “Henry Wells” as President and “Wm. G. Fargo” as Secretary. Matted and framed to an overall size of 17.75 x 14. In very good condition, with three vertical folds, scattered toning, mild rippling to edges, and two stamps to edges. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
