Description

A riveting, oversized portrait

Original 7.5 x 13 Falk Studios of New York (so stamped at the bottom) imperial bust portrait of Sherman in suit and bow tie, signed in the lower portion of the image in black ink, “W. T. Sherman, General 1887.” Triple cloth matted and framed to an overall size of 16 x 22. Two creases—one to lower left corner and one extending into Sherman’s forehead—otherwise fine, clean condition.

At the turn of the 20th century, Benjamin 'Jake' Falk (1852-1925) was the most reputable theatrical portraitist working in New York. The first strong adherent of artificial light sources in the studio, Falk created portraits that were among the most dramatically sculptural looking images of the time. Possessed of a playful visual wit, he often experimented with his images, using curious juxtapositions, unusual poses, and lighting highlights to convey distinctiveness of personality. Increasingly indifferent to painted backdrops, he did many portraits against blank walls or bleached out backcloths. An excellent, oversized example of Falk’s handiwork, an unusual and highly displayable pose of the retired general, impeccably attired. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
