United States Military Academy Class of 1909 thirtieth anniversary reunion book “Then and Now,” 9 x 12.25, signed on a back page left blank for signatures, “Geo. S. Patton, Jr.,” and also signed by 34 other attendees. Accompanied by a program from the Alumni Exercises, a notice of the seating arrangements for the graduation parade, a copy of “The Cadet’s Prayer”, and a June 10, 1939, telegram from Philip H. Carroll to those unable to attend the event. Patton’s signature is a shade light but completely legible, some mild toning to inside pages of book, and light wear to covers, otherwise fine condition.
In the late 1930s, Patton was assigned command of Fort Myer, Virginia. Shortly after he met with his West Point classmates at their thirtieth reunion, the world witnessed the start of World War II. It did not take long for US military officials to determine a need for armored divisions to fight the Nazis—a need that led to the activation of the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions in 1940, with the 2nd Armored Brigade, US 2nd Armored Division placed under Patton’s authority. Though Patton had already made a name for himself for his role in pursuing Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution and for heroism during World War I, his true destiny was waiting to be fulfilled within a few months of the reunion, when he would become one of America’s most feared—and respected—military leaders.
