Johnson’s tumultuous personal life and career were dramatized in the classic play (and subsequent film) The Great White Hope. Letter in response to an autograph seeker, in full: “I was handed a letter from you, just two days ago, asking me to autograph the enclosed card. I note you said I have not answered previous requests of yours. I am very sorry about that, but I have not heard from you before this particular letter. All mail does not usually get to me, as I travel around the country so much, doing shows etc. By the time I get back home, the mail is rather neglected. Accept my apologies for my neglect, will you, please? Good luck to you, and best wishes.” In very good condition, with light rippling and toning to corners from light mounting remnants to reverse, scattered light creasing, and a few spots of adhesive stains.
