Legendary American boxer (1875–1953) who was heavyweight champion of the world from 1899 to 1904. Bold vintage fountain pen signature, “Jas. J. Jeffries,” on an off-white 8.5 x 3 slip affixed by its upper corners to an ALS on Burbank, California, letterhead, from Jeffries’ friend, Walter R. Hinton, Mayor of Burbank. Hinton responds to an autograph collector’s request, in part “I think I know him as well as anyone, and will say he’s one of the finest men I ever knew.” In very good condition, affixed by the upper corners to the bottom of the aforementioned letter, with tape remnants to lower corners, two vertical folds (one lightly affecting two letters of the signature), and a block of toning from previous display. A handsome signature with a fascinating provenance. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
