War-dated TLS signed “D. E.,” one page, 6 x 8, Allied Force Headquarters letterhead, November 6, 1942. Letter to Lieutenant Craig Campbell. In part: “In this envelope are one or two messages, which please deliver immediately. If I can do so, I am sending you a bit of fruit, by returning bomber, which is difficult to obtain in London. If it arrives, please give about a dozen bananas and a few lemons to General Smith, keep about the same for yourself, and give the rest to Mrs. Summersby for herself and Mrs. Dixon.” Eisenhower adds a short handwritten postscript before his signature, “And letter to Mrs. Eisenhower by next pouch.” Kay Summersby was a member of the Auxiliary Transport Corps (ATC), British civilians hired to drive Americans in Britain, a service she performed for Eisenhower. A persistent rumor to this day is that Eisenhower had a war-time love affair with her. In very good condition, with multiple intersecting folds, and some scattered light toning and soiling.
