Endorsement as First Consul, “Bonaparte,” on the left edge of a 8.25 x 13 French LS, signed “Chazoud-Dutheil,” April 20, 1801, 24th Military Division, Bureau of Marine and Colonies letterhead, responding favorably to Chazoud-Dutheil’s request for a position in the first maritime expedition based on his previous experience. Chazoud-Dutheil mentions Generals Moreau and Menou in his letter. Of historical note, General Morneau assisted Napoleon in his overthrow of the Directory in 1799 bringing him to power as First Consul, and rewarded him with command of the Army of the Rhine. Light intersecting folds, small tear to left edge, some scattered light creasing and soiling, and a light circular stain touching several words of text, otherwise condition is fine.
