ALS as president, one page, 4.5 x 7, Executive Mansion letterhead, November 3, 1899. Letter to Dr. W. K. Newton, sending well wishes to his ailing Vice President. In part: “Am so glad that the Vice President is made comfortable. Mrs. McKinley sends love to him & Mrs. Hobart.” Matted and framed with an oval color portrait of McKinley, to an overall size of 10 x 19. Hobart served as the 24th Vice President of the United States under McKinley and became ill earlier in 1899. He returned to New Jersey to recover, but instead became worse, and Hobart died of heart failure in Paterson, New Jersey, on November 21, 1899. Following his death, the Vice Presidency remained vacant for more than a year until the inauguration of Theodore Roosevelt to that post in 1901. Interesting to note that if Hobart had lived longer and been renominated in 1900, he would have become President upon McKinley's assassination. In fine condition, with several ink and pencil notations to top, and a one-cent stamp affixed under signature. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
