Description

Lafayette defends a Spanish ally against a despised French Minister

LS in French, signed “Lafayette,” one page, 7.25 x 8.5, February 14, 1831. Letter to a government official. In full: “I would like to direct your attention, my dear Minister, on a Spaniard named Mr. Inglada, who has been terribly persecuted under the Ministry of Mr. De Peyronnet and who has several complaints to make. They seem totally legitimate and I know they will receive your undivided attention.”

Pierre-Denis, comte de Peyronnet (1778-1854) was the President of the Bordeaux Court in France in 1815, Minister of Justice from 1821 to 1828 and four times Minister of Interior. After becoming the Interior Minister for the fourth time in 1830, he counter-signed ordinances which provoked the July Revolution of 1830. He was then charged of high treason, alongside three other ministers of Charles X, and was condemned by the Court of Pairs to a life sentence and civil degradation.

Letter has been professionally inlaid by its second integral page to a slightly larger sheet. A mild shade of toning, and several intersecting folds, one through beginning of signature, otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
