Description

Wagner gets finicky over his books

Important German composer (1813–1883) who, by expanding harmonic, instrumental, and dramatic forces to a previously undreamed-of degree, single-handedly revolutionized opera and attained status as one of the most influential geniuses in the history of music. ALS in German, signed “Rich. Wagner,” one page, 5 x 7.25, March 6, 1870. Letter to book dealer Friedrich Prell in Luzern: In part: “I quite wish to have another copy from Schiller as well as from Shakespeare. I do not like the robust double binding and I believe that the great poets deserve every single work to be bound.” Just one day earlier, when Wagner was working on his autobiography, the town of Bayreuth and its opera house attracted his attention (he went to Bayreuth for a short visit in 1835). On February 1, 1871, he purchased the property. In fine condition, with light bisecting mailing folds, with professional reinforcement to horizontal fold on reverse, a mild shade of uniform toning, a bit heavier along bottom edge. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
