Italian composer (1813–1901) who takes a place among the most influential figures in the history of opera and whose works, including such classics as Rigoletto, La Traviata, and Aida, are a cornerstone of the genre. Beautiful and scarce AMQS, signed “G. Verdi,” Paris, 8th April 1894, on a beautiful 10.5 x 7 musical manuscript page with gold edging and a golden decoration. Verdi has chosen four bars of music and lyrics from the second act of his comic opera “Falstaff,” with the handwritten lyrics under the notes reading, in part, “Quand, ero paggio Del Duca die Norfolk.” Falstaff had its premiere on February 9, 1893 in Milan at La Scala and was Verdi's last opera. Consignor indicates that in April of 1894, Verdi attended a performance of Falstaff with Giuseppina at the Opéra comique in Paris. Reverse bears an AMQS by French composer Vincent d'Indy (1851-1931). D'Indy pens eight bars from his dramatic work “Le Chant de la Cloche,” signing at the bottom, “Vincent D’Indy,” and dated January 15, 1893. Falstaff was adapted by Arrigo Boito from Shakespeare’s plays The Merry Wives of Windsor and scenes from Henry IV. It was Verdi's last opera, and only the second of his 26 operas to be a comedy. It was also the third of Verdi's operas to be based on a Shakespearean play. Falstaff has long been an admired favorite with critics and musicians because of its brilliant orchestration, scintillating libretto and refined melodic invention. It is in the standard repertoire of many opera companies. In fine condition, with slightly rough right edge from removal from book, and some mild edge toning. Extraordinary and exceedingly uncommon!
