Description

Edward Codrington

British admiral (1770–1851) who, as captain of the Orion, was hailed as a hero at the Battle of Trafalgar. ALS signed “Edwd. Codrington,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, November 23, 1810. Codrington writes to Nathaniel Ogle. In part: “You need not be alarmed by my sending your son home on account of his health, because I have done it more as a precaution than as a case of necessity. He has lately been subject to a constipation of bowels which both the surgeon of the Hospital & of the Blake think he will not so well get rid of as by going home for a time, where he will have many advantages, in climate & in situation. I procured him Lieutenants apartments at the Hospital here, that he might have riding exercize as well as mild & other change of diet….” The adjacent leaf bears the address panel in Codrington’s hand (tears and partial separations). In very good condition, with small pinholes of paper loss along intersecting folds, wrinkling and creasing, and small seal-related tear to letter. RRAuction COA.
