British Major General (1742-1817) who commanded the relief column that saved the retreating British forces at the Battle of Lexington and Concord by skillfully using limited artillery rounds to prevent a failed expedition from becoming a major defeat. ALS signed “Northumberland,” one page, 4.75 x 7.25, November 29, 1815. Letter to noted painter Thomas Phillips requesting him to paint a portrait of Six Nation Chief, Teyoninhokavawen. In part: “The Chief who was at the head of All the Indians, during the last war with the United States, Teyoninhokavawen, commonly known among our troops by the name of Captain Norton, having promised to let me have his picture, I have desired him to set to you for that purpose.” In fine condition.
