ALS, in pencil, signed “John Kerouac,” on a 5.5 x 3.5 government postcard postmarked February 7, 1949. Kerouac writes to his teacher Elbert Lenrow. Lenbrow lectured on world literature at the New School for Social Research, where his students included Kerouac, Mario Puzo, and Allen Ginsberg. Lenrow also served as head of the English Department at the Fieldston School from 1933 to 1970. In full: “Took a quick trip west in the ’49 Hudson. Will be back next week and will re-register for your course, and see you about credits, points, etc. It was a tremendous trip though a little out of focus, as they say about sprawling novels. Thanks for your card.” Neal Cassady (1926-1968) was a major figure of the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the psychedelic movement of the 1960s, perhaps best known for being characterized as Dean Moriarty in Kerouac's On the Road.
