Interesting DS, signed “Charles A. Lindbergh,” two pages, 8 x 11, August 1, 1973. A typed document, headed “Miscellaneous Notes and Information,” related to Lindbergh’s finances. In part: “Royalties from G. P. Putnams for my book ‘We”: These are sent by the publishers directly to the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company for deposit in my account…. My understanding, in the spring of 1927, was that [Carlysle McDonald] would write a book about my flight to Paris from interviews and in the ‘third person,’ to which I would add a foreword. Instead, he submitted ghost-written manuscript in the ‘first person.’ I refused to authorize its use, and wrote the manuscript for ‘We’ myself…. In addition to being ghost-written, McDonald’s manuscript was highly inaccurate…. Masonic Lodge: I made application to join a Masonic Lodge, in St. Louis, about 1926. I never completed the initiation ceremonies, but was presented with an honorary degree or life membership about 1927. I resigned about 1942–43, when I received a bill for dues which implied a more active participation and support than I desired to give. My resignation was not accepted, but I personally consider it effective. I have great respect for the Masons, and have many friends in the organization, but I do not like the ceremonies and secrecy involved, and I do not wish to be a member of the Masonic order just as I do not wish to be a member of a church. I write this with deep appreciation of the honor of the life membership I received many years ago. Money-raising projects: Anne and I have always been extremely hesitant to permit the use of our names in connection with money-raising projects. There are always people and organizations ready to make use of any advantage well-known names may bring—in memorial and other projects—sometimes with the best of intent.
