Consider the following chronology: In 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American to venture into outer space. The following year, the U.S. was triumphant in its effort to propel American John Glenn around the Earth’s orbit. By 1969, these details of space travel were mastered, and Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon. Offered here is a Series 1963, one dollar “short snorter” that was signed on the portrait side by three of the most accomplished individuals ever to travel beyond Earth’s stratosphere: Neil Armstrong, Alan Shepard, and John Glenn. An interesting and attractive display, the bill is neatly set atop a slightly larger black leaf, which itself is affixed to an 8.5 x 11 information sheet that bears the images of all three signers. The potent inscriptions appear as “Neil Amrstrong” (black ink), “Alan Shepard” (blue felt tip), and “Best regards to Rick, J.H. Glenn, Jr.” (blue ballpoint). Each signature was thoughtfully placed in an area in which it would allow for maximum legibility, and thus the autographed remembrance comprises a striking presentation. Accompanying the magnificent keepsake is a 2004 letter of provenance from its original owner, which details when and where the three signatures were acquired. Fine condition with expected wear lightly affecting the currency. Housed in an attractive mat display. JSA/Scott Cornish Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
