A unique representation of NASA’s “Apollo” contingent is featured in this signed copy of Wernher von Braun and Frederick I. Ordway’s History of Rocketry & Space Travel. Decorating the title page of this first edition, first printing publication are the black felt tip signatures of each crew member of both Apollo 11 and Apollo 12, including Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, Charles Conrad, Dick Gordon, and Alan Bean. Author Wernher von Braun inscribed the half-title page, “To Obie, With kind regards and the best of luck with the Pershing shots,” and also featured on the half-title leaf are the autographs (in various inks) of more than 25 members of Braun’s “rocket team” who were staffers from the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (including co-author Frederick I. Ordway III, Robert R. Gilruth, and the book’s illustrator Hanks H. Lange, among several others). A touch of light wear affects the dust jacket, which benefits from the use of a few pieces of tape. Generally negligible instances of skinning are evident along the pastedowns, and subtle hints of scattered toning (mainly at the edges), in no way detract from the 244-page book’s otherwise fine condition. This one-of-a-kind, 8.5 x 11.25 relic of the space race was published in 1966 by J. G. Ferguson of Chicago. JSA/Scott Cornish Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
