Less than two months before Confederate commander Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, and merely 50 days before Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) met his untimely death, the 16th President of the United States signed this repatriation document. Even as the conflict of the American Civil War raged on—by then the tide certainly favoring “the North”—Lincoln believed it a paramount concern to return the nation to normalcy as rapidly as possible. This signed treasure, on a lined slip, is a relic of the “Reconstruction” era that lasted to 1877, and on it, Lincoln declares, “Let this man take the oath of December 8, 1863 and be discharged. A. Lincoln, Feb 25, 1865.” Nicely cloth matted and framed with an accompanying portrait to 20 x 27 overall dimensions, the President’s black fountain pen inscription retains superb strength and clarity.
