Pioneering American social activist (1820–1906) who was one of the leading figures in early feminism and whose efforts on behalf of women’s suffrage were instrumental in the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Archive consisting of: (1) ALS, signed “Susan B. Anthony,” penned on the reverse of a letter written by her sister Mary S. Anthony, with Susan writing on the first and third adjoining page, dated December 29, 1887. To Katherine G. Patterson, the President of the Colorado Equal Suffrage Association. In full: “A Happy New Year to you—And let me tell you how glad I am that my sister has resurrected your letters of last summer—and that I am at home, now, to write the slips for you to paste on the inside of the first cover of each volume of the cloth set you already have in hand—also on the fly leaf of each volume of a leather set to go to you—from me—I reverse your order—because I wish to present you the leather set and if you do not wish to present the cloth set to the Mercantile Library—just tell me—and I will send another Leather Set for that purpose—and you may place the Cloth set in your High School Library—or put it with Mr. Chain—to see if he can sell it—If he would like to have them on his tables—I will send him more—I presume you know both Mr. & Mrs. Chain We travelled together four years ago in Europe—and I learned to regard them very highly. I laugh over ‘environment’ too—I do not know who put it in that place—I am sure—probably Mrs. Stanton—as she was the pen-artist of the work.” In 1876, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Matilda Joslyn Gage began to prepare for publication the History of Woman Suffrage. Illustrated with steel engravings, the first three volumes of this work were published in 1881, 1882, and 1886. They cover the work of the National Woman Suffrage Association from the beginnings of the movement in 1848 to 1885. Volume III, which Mrs. Patterson had received in August, summarized laws, including the enfranchisement of women in Wyoming territory, that were indicative of the movement’s victories. (2) ANS signed “S.B.A.,” no date, written in the margin of a printed leaflet above the “Constitution of the National Woman Suffrage Association,” a short note to Katherine Patterson: “Will you be Vice President for Colorado next year—if not who will? I think Mrs. Shields is not living—S.B.A.” Mary F. Shields of Colorado Springs was the first President and state spokeswoman of the Colorado Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. She helped found the Colorado Woman Suffrage Association in 1876. (3) Rare unsigned printed leaflet, 5.5 x 8.5, headed “International Council of Women.” It announces “An International Council of Women” called by the National Woman Suffrage Association to be held in Washington, D.C., March 25–April 1, 1888. If the reader of this leaflet cannot “help by writing, by speaking, or by active work ... Money or pledges of large or small amounts will be most acceptable” or “Persons may make themselves members of the N.W.S.A.“ by the payment of one dollar” sent to the treasurer in Washington “or to the Chairman of the Special Finance Committee, Susan B. Anthony, Rochester, N.Y.” In fine condition, with expected folds to letter and leaflet, and Anthony’s signature a bit cramped at bottom of letter. RRAuction COA.
