American military officer and politician (1808–1889) who, after serving as a senator and U.S. Secretary of War, was the first and only president of the Confederacy, from 1861 until its collapse at the end of the Civil War. Final page of a longer ALS signed “Jeffer. Davis”,” one page, lightly-lined, 4.75 x 7. Davis concludes his letter: “The reason is visible and of course satisfactory. The specimens nos. 1 & 2 are returned, no. 3 I suppose being a copy may be for your files & is enclosed also.” In fine condition, with trimmed top edge, pencil notation at bottom, and a vertical fold.
