Hand addressed and free franked mailing envelope, 4.75 x 3, addressed in Pierce’s hand to “Ms. Alden Partridge, Bristol, Bucks Co. Penn,” and franked along the top, “Free Franklin Pierce.” Envelope also bears a January 15, Washington, D.C. cancellation. Letter is evidently to Ann Patridge, wife of Alden Partridge. Alden Partridge was an American author, legislator, officer, surveyor, an early superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York and a controversial pioneer in U.S. military education, establishing a series of private military academies throughout the country, including Norwich University. Nicely matted and framed with a vintage portrait engraving of Pierce, to an overall size of 13.25 x 21.25.
