GRAPE EXPECTATIONS: NELSON directs the delivery of wine and seeks assurance that “no opportunity may be afforded the Seamen for desertion”

Highly esteemed British admiral (1758–1805) best known for his participation in the Napoleonic Wars, during which, in the Battle of Trafalgar, he lost his life. Manuscript DS, signed “Nelson & Bronte,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 12.5, September 29, 1804. An order issued from aboard the Victory “at sea,” directing Commander Richard Thomas “to receive such Wine Pipes from the different Ships of the Squadron onboard His Majesty’s Bomb Vessel under your Command as the Captain of the Fleet shall direct, and proceed with them immediately to the Bay of Rosas, and on your arrival there deliver them to Mr. Edward Gayner, Merchant at that place, who will send off Boats for the said Cask, that no opportunity may be afforded the Seamen for desertion….” Light intersecting folds (vertical fold through “Nelson”), faint show-through of writing on opposing sides, and narrow mounting remnant to left margin of first page (well away from writing), otherwise fine, bright, clean condition.
