In full: “Let me thank you warmly for your kind letter of August 13th, and tell you of my deep appreciation of your generous editorial. I have read it with interest and gratification….” Wilson’s first wife, the former Ellen Axson (born 1860), died less than two weeks earlier, on August 6.
