Description

Distinguished statesman (1777–1852), longtime member of Congress, and three-time presidential candidate who became known as the “Great Compromiser” for his central role in the brokering of hot-button, slavery-related issues prior to the Civil War. ANS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 7 x 3, May 24, 1849. Brief note about a meeting with Horace Greeley. In full, “H. Clay will be happy to see H. Greeley at Ashland.” Matted with a color portrait of Clay, to an overall size of 10 x 14. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one bisecting signature, some light creasing and wrinkling, and slight show-through from notations on reverse. R&R COA.
