Confederate general (1821–1877) who earned a reputation as the greatest cavalry officer of the Civil War. A subject of controversy even in his own lifetime, Forrest’s military legacy remains permanently clouded by his prewar career as a millionaire slave trader and, later, his role as first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Partly printed DS, signed “N. B. Forrest,” one page, 8.25 x 3.5, September 1869. A self-contained portion of a bond issued by the Selma, Marion and Memphis Railroad Company stating that the principal and interest are payable in gold coin, signed by Forrest as president. Matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 16 x 20.75. A hint of mild soiling and small piece of tape to top edge, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
